Frequently Asked Questions

General

No! We have members with many different kinds of motorcycles. We do like BMW bikes. Our sponsors are BMW San Diego and BMW Escondido. But we don't discriminate, and if you want to join our rides on a non-BMW bike, you are more than welcome to.

We are an organization run by volunteers. Managing the day-to-day tasks of a 501(c) organization takes some time. We wanted to automate many of the tasks that we originally had to do manually by hand. When we freshened up the look and feel of the web site, we decided to put in as much automation as we could. We wanted to provide features that would enhance riding on a motorcycle and add value to BMWOCSD as a member. A dynamic, modern style with tools and features was something we talked about for a long time and we finally decide to work on it.

This is a club for everybody and it is important to stress that anyone is welcome to be a member of BMWOCSD. We do no require that you own a BMW motorcycle or any motorcycle for that matter. If you are interested in becoming a member of this club then we assume that your are at least an admirer of BMW motorcycles. All family members are welcome at all club events and we do hope they will decide to join the club too. Household or family members can join as Associate members with full voting privileges for half price. All members may bring guests to club events too.

Membership

Your account with your email address exists because we brought in all memberships when we created the new web site and released it on Sept 25, 2022. Your account needs to be activated and if it lapsed, renewed with payment. The process to reactivate your account takes two steps: 1) You need to reset your password. When importing the old accounts, we did not create nor send you a password for privacy reasons. So you need to reset it yourself. Go to bmwocsd.org and click on “Sign In”. Towards the bottom of the page is the link “Forgot your Password”. Click on that and follow the instructions. It will verify your email address by sending you a confirmation email with a link to complete the password reset process. Go ahead and do all that. 2) With the password reset, try to sign in. If you get a message that your account is inactive, then your membership has lapsed and you need to renew it with a payment. Click on “Sign Up”. It might be a little confusing why “Sign Up”, but it’s because on that page is a button in the middle that says “Renew Current Membership”. Click on that button. You will then be presented with a page requesting your email address and password. Please enter them (the new password, of course) and it should now verify properly and bring you to a payment page since it detects that your account is inactive. Preferably, for instantaneous activation, please choose the credit card option. Once payment is made via PayPal, you should then be activated and the final two steps are to accept the Terms of Use and to update your profile if you haven't yet done this.

Nearly all members have a "Regular" membership that is paid on an annual basis and has all of the benefits that BMWOCSD has to offer. A "Regular" member can add at a lower cost one member of their household as an "Associate". Each advertiser is offered one "Advertising" membership. And new for 2023 is a complimentary membership offered to buyers of a new or pre-owned BMW motorcycle from either San Diego BMW Motorcycles or BMW Motorcycles of Escondido (only if they have never been a member of BMWOCSD).

Memberships renew 1 year from the last renewal date, which is typically when you last paid for your current membership. So even if you renew early, you do not lose the remaining days on your current membership.

1) If you are on the Sign In page, at the bottom is a link named "Account lapsed and you need to renew?". Click on this and you will be brought to the renewal page. or 2) There is also a "Renew Current Membership" button on the Sign Up page. Click on this and you will be brought to the renewal page. The renewal page will open asking for your Email Address and Password. Your account will be reviewed and you will be given the opportunity to renew or upgrade if necessary. If you are already signed in, click on Account at the top of any page. If your membership is due for renewa, there will be a menu item labeled "Renew Membership". Select this to begin the renewal process.

Rides

Yes! On the third Sunday of the month the club holds a new members ride(NMR). New Members rides depart from a location determined by the ride leader, check the website for the most up-to-date information. Non-members are welcome to ride in this group to learn more about the club. If you like the rides and the atmosphere, we then ask you to join as a member to continue participating in the New Members Ride. For more details, contact the Road Captain. Note: This ride is a new members ride, not a new riders ride. That is to say, you should be competent to ride your motorcycle on city streets and highway, at a speed that is at least the speed limit. You should also be comfortable riding in a group setting.

Events

They can be found in the footer of any page under About Our Events.

Advertising

You can contact our Advertising Director via email for more information on how and where you can advertise.

Socializing

There are many. Meetings are not just for conducting club business but where one can eat and socialize before the meetings. This is the same for all of our rides. However, special emphasis is placed upon events like our July 'Welcome to Summer BBQ' event at a members home. Then in July is the Annual Picnic at Vacation Isle in Mission Bay. August brings us the annual pool party at a member's home with food and bocce ball. In September is the Oktoberfest Rally at one of San Diego County Parks. The end of the year celebration is the club's holiday party at local San Diego restaurant. All members are welcome.

Newsletter

The newsletters are archived and available only to members of BMWOCSD. We have newsletters from as far back as 1970. A few are missing, as this archiving effort is only recent. We hope to find those missing issues. Non-member uses perusing the web site only have access to a small number of issues of the newsletter. We provide these so you can see the value of the newsletter and join as a full member.

Yes! We want your articles. We are open to printing articles on any matter relating to the sport of motorcycles and even a few that might stretch the relationships. We appreciate you writing it as accurately as possible to reduce the amount of editing that we might have to do, and include as many full color photos as you would like. The newsletter is mostly digital and will be 100% digital in the near future, so there really isn't any practical limits with regards to printing resources. Contact us at editor@bmwocsd.org and tell us what you would like to write.

Technical

We want to make sure we're giving you the best news and video experience, but to do that we rely on the latest technology found in modern web browsers.

We currently support:

Windows (7, 8, 10)

  • Internet Explorer (Version 11)
  • Chrome (Versions 65+)
  • Firefox (Versions 59+)
  • Edge (Versions 16+)

Updating your browser

Visit Browse Happy to find the latest version of your browser for download.

Note that there are little issues that remain as with all the different browsers and operating systems and computer devices. They all do NOT play happily with one another. For example, Google Chrome browsers on Android do not show embedded PDFs as well as Apple OS X and iOS devices. And some of the mailto links (links that open directly in your designated mail app) do not always work in all Chrome browsers due to the way its settings are configured. If you have issues, try another browser.

The answer is simple. Cost. To keep costs down during development, testing and production phases, the open free mapping service Open Street Maps is used in lieu of Google Maps.

Google charges for map access while Open Source Maps does not. Developers can get a certain number of “views” for free, but once in production, Google requires payment of fees. The fees are hefty as well, and since BMWOCSD is non-profit with no major revenue derived from the use of this web site, there is no sustaining income to support those fees.

Where ever it is possible, we will link to your device's default map app (Google or Apple Maps, for example) and display locations that way rather than embedding them all the time in our web site. There is no cost to this process. We also will not make any reverse geocoding calls to pinpoint specific addresses or locations within our web site. That requires expensive direct calls to Google's API for the highest accuracy compared to free, open-source systems like Nominatum.

The entire web site is built with a database and active server components that are constantly listening to requests from your browser. The original hosting site is still being used for this modern approach. The original web site only ran static web pages and did not require a lot of computer power. This new site will require quite a bit more CPU performance, network bandwidth, disk performance and other factors that comprise a modern hosting solution. We are evaluating whether this current system is sufficient for the needs of our membership.

For the time being, yes. This is a modern web app which provides a lot more functionality than simple static browsing pages. However, we are aware that as good as modern browsers are, there are still some things that it will not be able to do well when compared to a purpose-developed mobile app, for iOS or Android. We will continue to look at the features we want to provide and whether a mobile app is better suited.
